Directly north of Montana and capital of Canada’s Alberta, Edmonton celebrated its 100th birthday as a city in 2004 and also stakes claim as Canada’s "Festival City." Among more than 20 major events unfolding throughout the year are the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, International Fringe Theatre Festival, Canadian Finals Rodeo, and Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival. The University of Alberta provides a rich array of cultural offerings, and the West Edmonton Mall is among the world’s largest entertainment centers with more than 800 stores, 110 eating establishments, and eight major attractions including an aquatic amusement park. Other attractions include the Alberta Aviation Museum, Budweiser Motorsports Park, and the Devonian Botanic Garden. With backpackers often attracted to the hostel accommodations in Old Strathcona, the historical and artistic district on the city’s south side, Greater Edmonton offers more than 12,000 rooms in bed and breakfasts, motels and hotels.
